[At one time in the distant past, they had a house with a tire swing outside of it. They enjoyed burnt pancakes on the weekends as a family. Every so often they ate at King County Café to celebrate a special occasion. And so, so much more.
Now that Judith was a little older, Carl wanted to recreate that environment for her a little. But they didn't have too much in the way, well, anything anymore and the only things he could find laying around was a worn tire and some rope so the one thing would have to do. Coming up with the idea and making the idea a reality was a lot more harder than he thought, though.
So there he was, trying to throw the rope over the tree branch and not quite getting it each time because of his perception. Carl grumbles frustratedly as the rope comes back down. Judith sitting on the grass next to him, watching with eyes full of curiosity. She would be surprised when she knew what it was he was doing, he thought. He wasn't gonna give up.]
[ It's almost like things are normal again. Well, as normal as trying to live how things used to be while in the world they live in, now. Of course they can never really go back to how things used to be, but with Alexandria? Maybe there's a chance. A neighborhood with good people, a steady routine, and god, electricity? Rick couldn't have asked for anything better for Carl and Judith.
He's coming off from his patrol shift when he spots his children in the front yard. He'd rightly worried, having Carl watch Judy all the time and not interact with the teenagers his own age, but he'd wanted to. Rick understands. Adjusting is difficult for all of them. Being on the road and coming to this, it's hard to put down the vigilance.
He watches what Carl is doing as he approaches, and beams. He remembers that old tire swing in front of their home in King County, how they could hardly get Carl off of it to come inside when it got dark. ]
Why don't we grab the ladder? We can secure it better up top.
[Almost. They have pretty much everything they used to seeing as how they had middle class lives. As far as anything went in this world, they still did. Quite possibly even upper class considering their fortune in Alexandria. The only difference is that Carl would never be able to rest easy. There would come a time when someone else wanted what they had and he would keep himself mentally prepared for that.
That determination was just focused on tying up the tire swing right now. So when his dad approaches with a suggestion of his own, he throws the rope up towards the branch one more time before letting it fall to the ground and turning to him. A small frown forms before it can actually to a smile. He likes the idea just wishes he could have done it without a ladder.]
I was trying to do it without it. [Like a challenge or feat of skill. Then he explains more:] I couldn't leave Judith to go get it.
[Meanwhile, seeing their dad is home again, Judith walks over to rope and seems happy, even proud, to pick it up and bring it to him, holding it out. She smiles while calling him 'Dada'.]
